What is Bisphenol A?

Bisphenol A is used in the production of epoxy resins and polycarboante plastics.

The situation has become so serious and from February 2005 a new EU standard for testing feeding bottles was introduced throughout Europe. These tests have always included checks for well known dangerous chemicals such as lead and mercury in the components of the bottle. However from the above date manufacturers will now have to test for leaching of Bisphenol A. It has been known for some time that scratched and worn polycarbonate feeding bottles will leach this chemical. A report published in the UK in March 2004 showed that polycarbonate bottles of all types leach increasing levels of Bisphenol A as they are used and sterilized.                                                        

Environment

 17 million barrels of oil are used each year to produce bottles for water bottling. It takes 3 liters of water to produce 1 liter of bottled water and as a result 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide is produced. 4 out of 5 bottles are never recycled. Those that are use millions of barrels of oil in the recycling process. The FDA regulates bottled water, requiring testing every 30 days, but only for bottles that cross state lines. Otherwise, they are unregulated with no testing required. The FDA has only one inspector to do this job for all 50 states. The EPA requires testing of your tap water 5 to 7 times daily but that's at the source, not at your tap. The 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act allows pipes with as much as 8% lead to still be labeled as "lead free". Only 2% of all the world's water is fresh water  with only .1% accessible to man. Wars are already starting over water and it is only going to get worse as our population seeks to expand by another 2 billion people with no additional water sources. It is no wonder that water is now regarded as "Blue Gold", more costly than gas or oil and probably just as rare.
